Localization properties of the Riesz \(s\)-fractional gradient \(D^su\) of a vectorial function \(u\) as \(s\) approaches \(1\) from below in Bessel spaces \(H^{s,p}\) for \(0 < s < 1\) and \(1 < p < +\infty\) are investigated. This \(s\)-fractional gradient converges strongly to the classical gradient \(Du\) when \(s\) approaches \(1\) from below and \(u\) is taken this in the Sobolev space \(W^{1, p}\). Further weak compactness and weak convergence statements are derived, among which a semicontinuity result of polyconvex functionals involving \(s\)-fractional gradients. The full \(\Gamma\)-convergence of the functionals is however obtained only when \(p > n\).
