Let \(R\) be a commutative noetherian ring. A Noether normalization of \(R\) is a module-finite ring extension \(A\subseteq R\) in which \(A\) is noetherian with finite global dimension. The Jacobian ideal of \(R\) is defined as \[\mathrm{Jac}(R):= \sum _{A\subseteq R} \mathrm{Fitt}^{R}_{0}\left(\Omega_{R|A}\right)\] where the sum runs over all Noether normalizations \(A\subseteq R\). The authors prove that if \(R\) is an affine algebra over a field or an equicharacteristic complete local ring of Krull dimension \(d\), then there is an integer \(s\geq 0\) such that \[\mathrm{Jac}(R)^{s}\mathrm{Ext}^{d+1}_{R}(M,N)=0\] for every \(R\)-module \(M\) and \(N\). Moreover, they show that if \(R\) is further assumed to be equidimensional with \(2\mathrm{depth}(R_{\mathfrak{p}})\geq \dim(R_{\mathfrak{p}})\) for every \(\mathfrak{p}\in \mathrm{Spec}(R)\), then \(s=1\). The new idea in their work is to consider a derived analogue of the Noether different by exploiting the derived Hochschild cohomology.
