The author proves the following theorems. {Theorem 1.} The only rational solutions of the equation \[y^{2}= x^{6} - 39\] are \((x, y)=(\pm 2, \pm 5)\). {Theorem 2.} The only rational solutions of the equation \[y^{2}= x^{6} - 47\] are \((x, y)=(\pm 6.3, \pm 249.953)\). The proof of theorem 1 makes use of elementary, albeit highly non-trivial, calculations in the real cubic field \(\mathbb{Q}[\theta],\;\theta^{3}=39\), including 2-descent over that field on the elliptic curve \(v^{2}= u^{3} - 39\) . According to the author, his method can be also applied to describing the set of the rational points on some other curves of genus 2. Theorem 2 is proved by similar calculations in the imaginary quadratic field \(\mathbb{Q}[t]/(t^{2} + 47)\).
