The authors present a three-dimensional mathematical model to simulate polydisperse sedimentation that includes the compressibility of the sediment and the viscosity of the mixture. This model can be used for simulations in industrial applications and geophysical flows. The model is vertically consistent with the classical 1D vertical model but with the property that solid particles are transported in all directions. Under the assumption of shallow water, the compression term is essentially vertical. Thanks to this mathematical model, it is able to know the concentration of each solide particle species dispersed in the fluid. Some numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the coupled solids volume fraction and flow fields in various scenarios and the effect of the compressibility and viscosity terms.
