Let \(H=(H,||\cdot||)\) be a complex Hilbert space, \(V\) be a bounded linear operator on \(H\), and \(\rho(V)\) the resolvent set of \(V\). Then, the authors define a metric on \(\rho(V)\) by \(g_x(z)=||(V-zI)^{-1}x||\) for \(x\in H\) and \(z\in \rho(V)\), \(I\) stands for the identity operator on \(H\). Next, the authors define the arc length of \(C_r=\left\{z(t)=r\exp(2it\pi):t\in[0,1]\right\}\) by \(L_x(C_r)=2\pi r\int_0^1||(V-r\exp(2ti\pi)I)^{-1}x||\,dt\). Therefore, by putting \(V(\theta)= (V-r\exp(i\theta)I)^{-1}\) for \(\theta\in [0,2\pi]\), they show that there is a unit vector \(y\in H\) such that \[ r\int_0^{2\pi}\frac{V^*(\theta)V(\theta)y}{||V(\theta)y||}\,d\theta=L_y(C_r)y,\] whenever \(L_y(C_r)\) is either the supremum or the infimum of the bounded set \(S_r=\{L_y(C_r):||y||=1\}\) (Theorem 2.1). The authors provide two applications of this theorem. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1455.47001].
