Let \(p\) be a prime and \(\mathbb C_p\) the completion of \(\overline {\mathbb Q_p}\) with respect to the \(p\)-adic absolute value \(\mid \cdot \mid_p\). If \(x\) is a non-zero element in \(\{ x\in \mathbb C_p; \mid x\mid_p<p^{-\frac 1{p-1}}\}\), then the author proves Mahler's theorem, i.e., that \(x\) and \(\sum_{k\geq 0}\frac{x^k}{k!}\) are not both in \(\overline{\mathbb Q}\). Some other well-known results are presented here. All the proofs make use of some version of the \(p\)-adic analytic subgroup theorem.
