Summary: In this paper, we study the effect of the outer boundary location for the flow past an impulsively started circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers (\(Re\)). The assumed far field represented by the outer radius of the annular physical domain is thoroughly investigated along with that of the position of the cross-cut. We present numerical solutions for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations that govern the incompressible viscous flows such as the one studied here. The simulations are carried out with the help of a recently developed fourth order accurate compact scheme. It is seen that length of the outer radius always affects the flow variables irrespective of the grid size and the cross-cut positioned at the left side of the cylinder yields more efficient computation than the one located on the right. Comparisons are made with established numerical and experimental results and excellent agreement is found in all the cases, both qualitatively and quantitatively confirming the efficiency of the HOC scheme being used.
