Given a standard graded commutative algebra \(R\) over a field \(k\), one can consider the Koszul complex \(K\) of \(R\) (which is a differential graded algebra) and the homology algebra \(H\) of \(K\). Furthermore, one can resolve the ground field by free modules over \(R\) and \(H\) and by semifree modules over \(K\). The main purpose of this paper is to compare these resolutions. In particular, the author focuses on the question of when these three resolutions are linear resolutions. It is well studied when the resolution over \(R\) is linear and it brings us to the theory of Koszul algebras. Linearity of the resolutions over \(K\) and \(H\) requires a little bit of attention but the author does this carefully and introduces DG Koszul algebras and strand-Koszul algebras. As the author mentions, the first main result is not surprising and compares the Koszulity of \(R\) and \(K\): If \(R\) is a standard graded commutative algebra, then \(R\) and its Koszul complex \(K\) are Koszul simultaneously. The second main result says that \(H\) is strand-Koszul if and only if \(K\) (or equivalently \(R\)) is Koszul and \(K\) is quasi-formal. This is equivalent to saying that the minimal graded free resolution of the ground field over \(R\) has an Eilenberg-Moore filtration. Finally, the author gives conditions which guarantee that \(H\) is strand-Koszul. Examples include but not limited to: if \(R\) is Koszul with embedding dimension at most 3, if \(R\) is Koszul and Golod, if \(R\) is a quadratic complete intersection, if \(R\) is artinian Gorenstein of socle degree 2 (and \(k\) is not of characteristic \(2\)).
