For a metric continuum \(X\), \(C(X)\) denotes the hyperspace of subcontinua of \(X\). A connected space \(Z\) is unicoherent provided that \(A\cap B\) is connected for every pair of closed connected subsets \(A\) and \(B\) such that \(Z=A\cup B\). A connected space \(Z\) has property (b) if every mapping from \(Z\) to the unit circle in the plane is homotopic to a constant mapping. It is a well known result that a metric connected space having property (b) is unicoherent. An element \(A\) of \(C(X)\) makes a hole in \(C(X)\) if \(C(X)\setminus \{A\}\) is non-unicoherent. The concept of making holes in hyperspaces was introduced by \textit{J. G. Anaya} [Topology Appl. 154, No. 10, 2000--2008 (2007; Zbl 1128.54005)]. Since then several authors have studied different aspects of the problem of determining which elements make holes in several hyperspaces. In the paper under review the authors study the problem of characterizing the elements making holes in \(C(X)\). They reach this goal when: (A) \(X\) is a dendroid, and (B) \(X\) is a chainable continuum. They also prove that if \(X\) is an indecomposable continuum having property (b), then no element in \(C(X)\) makes a hole in \(C(X)\).
