\textit{G. Aranda Pino} et al. [Am. J. Math. 132, No. 3, 563--610 (2010; Zbl 1206.16003)], inspired by \textit{E.~Kirchberg} and \textit{M.~Rørdam}'s definition [Am. J. Math. 122, No.~3, 637--666 (2000; Zbl 0968.46042)], introduced the notions of purely infinite and properly purely infinite for (not necessarily simple) rings, as the non-simple generalization of the definition given in [\textit{P. Ara} et al., \(K\)-Theory 26, No. 1, 69--100 (2002; Zbl 1012.16013)] for simple rings. In the same paper, the authors investigated the relationship between \(C^*\) and ring notions, as well as the relation between purely infinite and properly purely infinite. In the paper under review, the author investigates (non-simple) purely infinite Steinberg algebras and Kumjian-Pask algebras. To this end, the author recalls the necessary definitions and results about both classes of algebras in Section~2. In Section~3, he shows that a Steinberg algebra is properly purely infinite if and only if its characteristic functions on open compact bisections are properly infinite (Theorem~3.4), and gives some sufficient conditions to attain this goal (Corollary~3.6). In Section~4, he does the same work for Kumjian-Pask algebras of strongly aperiodic \(k\)-graphs; he concludes that properly purely infinite and purely infinite Kumjian-Pask algebras coincide, and are characterized by the proper infiniteness of their vertex idempotents (Theorem~4.2), and gives some sufficient conditions to attain this goal (Corollary~4.5 \& Proposition~4.6). Finally, in Section~5, he investigates the relationship between pure infiniteness of the complex Steinberg algebra \(A_{\mathbb{C}}(\mathcal{G})\) and of its \(C^*\)-completion \(C_r^*(\mathcal{G})\) (in the reduced norm); he gives some results for second countable, Hausdorff, amenable and strongly effective groupoids (Proposition~5.4), with applications to Kumjian-Pask algebras (Corollary~5.5).
