The aim of the work is to compare the capacity of two classification methods, the maximum likelihood (ML) based classifier and the convolutional neural networks (CNN) based classifier to discriminate between the coordinate- delay radar images of instantaneous and delayed targets for different values of the system and target parameters. For this study, one considers imaging restricted to a plane, normal to the antenna trajectory. Backgrounds on the Range-Delay Radar Imaging are reviewed in the second section of the paper with references to the articles from \textit{M. Gilman} and \textit{S. Tsynkov} [Inverse Probl. 35, No. 8, Article ID 085005, 38 p. (2019; Zbl 07089977)] and \textit{M. Gilman} and \textit{S. Tsynkov} [Inverse Probl. Imaging 14, No. 3, 511--533 (2020; Zbl 07208031)]. The Maximum likelihood-based classifier (ML) is presented in the third section and the convolution neural network (CNN) method is described in the fourth section of the work. The fifth section is devoted to the evaluation of the performances of both methods.
