The traditional homogenization theory with fast oscillating periodic coefficients deals with the periodicity in Cartesian coordinates. The authors extend the theory to functionally graded materials by introducing additional variables to describe a smooth spatial variation of a periodic structure of inclusions. For instance, let \(A_{ij}(\xi,x)\) be periodic functions of the fast variable \(\xi\) and of the slow variable \(x\). The inclusions are arranged with a period \(\varepsilon\) in the framework of the traditional homogenization theory. The authors consider quasi-periodic coefficients determined by the dependence \(A_{ij}(\xi_1 x_1, \xi_2)\) when medium is compressed in the \(x_1\)-direction. The Papkovich-Neuber and Eshelby formulas are used to determine the effective properties of functionally graded dilute dispersed composites.
