The Brezis-Marcus inequality says that \[ \int_{\Omega}|\nabla f|^2 dx \ge \frac{1}{4}\int_{\Omega}\frac{|f|^2}{(\operatorname{dist}(x,\partial\Omega))^2} dx+\frac{1}{4(\operatorname{diam} \Omega)^2} \int_{\Omega}|f|^2 dx, \] where \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n\) is a bounded convex domain and \(f\) is any real-valued function in \(\mathcal{C}_0^{\infty}(\Omega)\). The question raised is whether it is possible to replace the constant \(\lambda = 1/(4 (\operatorname{diam} \Omega)^2)\) in the inequality above by \(\lambda = K(n)/(4(|\Omega|^{2/n})\), where \(K(n)\) is a positive constant and \(|\Omega|\) is the volume of the domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). The first section of the paper is a survey of the results in this direction. The second section concerns the Rellich-type inequalities originating from the original Rellich inequality \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}|\Delta f|^2 dx \ge \frac{n^2(n-4)^2}{16}\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|f|^2}{|x|^4} dx \] for each function \(f \in \mathcal{C}_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n)\setminus \{0\}\). The third section deals with the Brezis-Marcus problem for conformally invariant inequalities.
