A three-level method with a third-order temporal accuracy is developed for solving parabolic partial differential equations. The Gauss-Seidel method is used as an iterative algorithm to obtain the approximate solutions. The von Neumann stability analysis is presented and the stability conditions are derived, the consistency analysis of the proposed method is provided. The accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated using three boundary layer flow problems such as the Stokes first and second problems with heat transfer to incorporate the effect of viscous dissipation. A comparison with the second-order Crank-Nicolson method shows the advantages of the proposed method in terms of convergence rate and accuracy.
