This paper generalizes classical results in the ODE theory to some real linear DAEs, regarding Lagrange stability/instability and dissipativity. It is the first of two papers, the second one developing the Lyapunov stability and a full example. These semilinear DAEs write \[ \frac{d}{dt}[A(t)x]+B(t)x = f(t,x), \] for \(t\geq t_+, \: t_0\geq t_+\) and \(x(t_0)=x_0\) be given. By use of \(t\)-dependent projectors, the author transforms the initial system and defines the consistency manifold, containing the pairs \((t, x)\) satisfying the algebraic constraints. Upon technical conditions, Theorem 2.1 and 2.2 on global solvability are proved. The Lagrange stability (which means the global boundeness of the solution) is established in Theorem 2.5 and the proof relies on strong hypotheses on the associated pencil \(\lambda A(t) + B(t)\), the derivatives of the map \(f\) and the consistency manifold. Similarly, theorems of dissipativity (controlled boundeness) and Lagrange instability are obtained. This paper is not easy to read, since it contains many details of the proofs, and two versions of each theorem are described (the second one applying to the form \(A(t)\frac{dx}{dt}+B(t)x= f(t,x)\)). It is a good application of geometrical results known on DAEs and linear pencils, to prove anaylsis theorems related to the solution spaces. For Part II, see [the author, Differ. Equ. 57, No. 2, 196-209 (2021; Zbl 1466.34015); translation from Differ. Uravn. 57, No. 2, 210-223 (2021)].
