The paper concerns with the following problem. Let \(\Omega\) be a smooth bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), \(n\ge 2\), and function \(u\) be a solution to the equation \(\Delta u=\lambda f(u)\) in \(\Omega\), vanishing on \(\partial\Omega\). Here \(\lambda\) is a negative real number, and \(f\) is a \(C^1\) non-negative and non-decreasing real-valued function. The authors show that for every \(\lambda<0\) there exists a unique solution \(u_{\lambda}\) of this Dirichlet problem. They also discuss the asymptotic behavior of these solutions as the parameter \(\lambda\) decreases without bound. In addition, the authors specify some of their results for model nonlinear functions \(f\) arising in physical applications.
