Let \(f: \mathbb R^n\rightarrow \mathbb R^n\) (\(n \ge 2\)) be a quasiregular map. The maximum modulus set of \(f\) is the set \[\mathcal M(f)=\{x\in \mathbb R^n| |f(x)|=\max_{|y|=|x|}|f(y)|\},\] where \(|x|\) denotes the Euclidean norm of \(x\in \mathbb R^n\). This set is closed and has nonempty intersection with every sphere centered at the origin. For entire functions on the complex plane, the maximum modulus set is quite restricted. Indeed, a classical result of Blumenthal states that in this case either \(\mathcal M(f)=\mathbb C\) or \(\mathcal M(f)\) is a countable union of analytical curves. In the paper under review the authors construct examples which show that, if a closed set has nonempty intersection with every sphere centered at the origin, then it arises as the maximum modulus set of some quasiregular map. These quasiregular maps are of polynomial type. The authors also have a version of this result for transcendental quasiregular maps.
