The aim of this paper is to consider adiabatic deformations of Riemann surfaces that preserve the integrability of the corresponding dynamical systems. This leads to the appearance of modulated quasi-periodic motions similar to the effect of parametric resonance. The author shows that this allows one to control both amplitude and frequency of nonlinear modes. He also considers a number of examples of dynamics of top-type systems that exhibit this effect. This paper is organized as follows. The first section is an introduction to the subject. The second section deals with the algebro-geometric method. Here the author gives a brief review of the method of finite-gap integration. The third and forth sections are devoted to Whitham deformations of Lax equations and to the structure of Whitham deformations. In the fifth section, the author considers two important examples of dynamical systems that can be integrated by the finite-gap method: the von Neumann system, which describes the motion of a point on the two-dimensional sphere and the Kowalewski top on the rotation of a rigid body about a fixed point. The article is supported by an appendix containing the proof of the existence of a differential possessing certain properties stated in the paper.
