Denote by \(n_K\) the smallest non-splitting prime in an algebraic number field \(K\), and let \(n_{K,C}\) be the smallest prime which either ramifies in \(K\) or its Frobenius automorphism does not lie in a given conjugacy class \(C\) in the Galois closure of \(K\). In the case of quadratic fields of discriminant \(d\) it has been shown by \textit{Y. K. Lau} and \textit{J. Wu} [Int. J. Number Theory 4, 423--435 (2008; Zbl 1172.11030)] that the bound \(n_K=O(\log|d|)\) holds for \(d\le x\) with exception of \(O(x\exp(-c\log x(\log\log x)^{-1}))\) fields. The author obtains the same assertion for fields whose Galois closure has Galois group \(S_n\) with \(n\le 5\) (Theorem 1) and proves also an analogous result for \(n_{K,C}\) (Theorem 3.)
