The authors analyse an anisotropic material with dipolar structure in the context of thermoelasticity without energy dissipation. First, they derive a conservation law for the energy. Then they consider that the material is linear with respect to the thermal displacement gradient and nonlinear with respect to temperature and gradients of displacements. In this context, they derive an energy inequality, prove a result of instability and a result of non-existence of the solution on a finite time interval. In the last part, the authors neglect the mechanical effects. Thus, the problem becomes nonlinear with respect to the conduction of heat. It is shown that this problem cannot admit a solution in finite time. Editorial remark: For related arguments and ideas see [\textit{R.~Quintanilla}, Contin. Mech. Thermodyn. 13, No.~2, 121--129 (2001; Zbl 1001.74037)].
