The authors present a simple ``unit cell'' micromechanical model which allows for an effective description of time-dependent nonlinear behavior of magnetostrictive polymer composites. The model is based on the homogenization technique for composites with periodic microstructure. The nonlinear magnetoelastic behavior is due to large magnetic driving fields, while the nonlinear viscoelastic response is associated with stress and temperature. The nonlinear magnetoelastic behavior of magnetostrictive constituents is represented by a phenomenological constitutive law proposed earlier by \textit{G. P. Carman} and \textit{M. Mitrovic} [``Nonlinear constitutive relations for magnetostrictive materials with applications to 1-d problems'', J. Intell. Mater. Syst. Struct. 6, No. 5, 673--683 (1995; \url{doi:10.1177/1045389X9500600508})]. Linearized constitutive relations are first considered for obtaining trial responses of the magnetostrictive composites. Then an iterative scheme is employed to improve the results for nonlinearity. The presented model is applicable to magnetostrictive composites reinforced by continuous fiber, particle, and lamina reinforcements dispersed in a nonlinear viscoelastic matrix. The predicted responses of the composites are validated with the available experimental data. Numerical results are then presented for various magnetostrictive composites. Time-dependent and nonlinear behavior shows different degrees of dependence on microstructural geometry, reinforcement volume fraction, environmental temperature, and loading rate of magnetic and mechanical inputs.
