Given a Banach space \(X\) and \(A\subset X^*\), the \textit{weak* derived set \(A^{(1)}\)} is given as \[ A^{(1)} = \bigcup_{n=1}^\infty \overline{A\cap n B_{X^*}}. \] Given a successor ordinal \(\alpha\), we put \(A^{(\alpha)} = (A^{(\alpha - 1)})^{(1)}\) and for a limit ordinal \(\alpha\) we put \(A^{(\alpha)} = \bigcup_{\beta < \alpha} A^{(\beta)}\). The \textit{order} of \(A\) is the least ordinal \(\alpha\) such that \(A^{(\alpha)} = A^{(\alpha + 1)}\). It is known that for reflexive spaces \(X\) the order of any convex \(A\subset X^*\) is either \(0\) or \(1\). In 2011 Ostrovskii proved that for any nonreflexive Banach space \(X\) there exists a convex set \(A\subset X^*\) of order greater than \(1\), that is, \(A^{(1)}\neq A^{(2)}\), see [\textit{M. Ostrovskii}, Note Mat. 31, No. 1, 129--138 (2011; Zbl 1253.46012)]. The main result of the author is the following extension of the above mentioned result by Ostrovskii. {Main result:} For any nonreflexive Banach space \(X\) and any \(\alpha\in \mathbb{N}\cup\{\omega+1\}\) there exists a convex set \(A\subset X^*\) of order \(\alpha\). Let me note that this result was recently pushed forward in the preprint ``Weak* closures and derived sets for convex sets in dual Banach spaces'' by \textit{M.~Ostrovskii} [\url{arXiv:2112.04670}], who proved that the same holds for any countable successor ordinal \(\alpha\), that is, for any nonreflexive Banach space \(X\) and any countable ordinal \(\alpha\) there exists a convex set \(A\subset X^*\) of order \(\alpha+1\).
