The author considers the Maxwell equations with space and time dependent material parameters, leading to a boundary value problem for a first order hyperbolic system. A priori estimates are obtained for solutions in the space \(H^m\). The constants in the a priori estimates are shown to depend on on suitable norms of the coefficients. A combination of the estimates and various regularization results yields existence of solutions in \(H^m\). The underlying domain should have sufficiently regular boundary.
