Let \(s\) be a partition of the set of all primes, \(G\) a finite group, \(F\) a Fitting class of finite groups. Theorem 3 of \textit{R. A. Bryce} and \textit{J. Cossey} [Math. Z. 127, 217--223 (1972; Zbl 0229.20011)] and Theorems 4.7 and 4.10 in \textit{L. A. Shemetkov} [Formations of finite groups, (Russian), Moskva, Nauka (1978; Zbl 0496.20014)] states: ``A solvable local formation \(F\) is a Fitting class if and only if every value of the canonical formation function of \(F\) is a Fitting class''.\par In the paper under review, the following two questions are answered in the affirmative (note, that the finite groups involved there, are not necessarily solvable): \par Question 1: Is it true that that an \(s\)-local (in particular local) Fitting class is a formation if and only if every value of the canonical \(s\)-local \(H_s\) function (\(H\)-function) of \(F\) is a formation?\par Question 2 (paraphrased here): Same question as in question 1, but with the words: ``formation'' replaced everywhere by ``Locket formation'' ? \par In the Introduction and the Preliminaries, the authors present a survey about a lot of definitions and results as to be found in the existing literature; very impressive, usefull and illuminating. We refrain of exposing these here. The affirmative answers to both questions are technical (as is to be expected) and occupy about half of the text of the whole paper.\par A glance at the list of the eighteen occurring references reveals that the subjects of investigation regarding formation theory of finite groups, are of a rather recent nature. Namely, twelve of them do fall into the recent twenty years, two of them between 1990 and 2000, but the rest of them between 1970 and 1980. This observation resembles the actual status of the developments of the subjects under investigation.
