A monoid variety is a cancellable element of the lattice of monoid varieties if and only if it coincides with one of the varieties \(T\), \(SL\), \(C_2\), \(D\) or \(MON\). \par Here, \(T\), \(SL\), and \(MON\) denote the variety of trivial monoids, the variety of semilattice monoids, and the variety of all monoids, respectively. Moreover \(C_2 = \mathrm{var}\{x^2 \approx x^3, xy \approx yx\}\) and \(D = \mathrm{var}\{x^2 \approx x^3, x^2 y \approx xyx \approx yx^2\}\).
