In a preceeding paper, the authors proved that no spin foliation on a compact enlargeable manifold with Hausdorff homotopy graph admits a metric of positive scalar curvature on its leaves. This result extends the classical results by Lichnerowicz, Gromov and Lawson, and by Connes on the non-existence of metrics of positive scalar curvature. Later the Hausdorff and compactnes assumptions were relaxed by Zhang and Su. This paper reviews the tools needed to prove these results, extends the non-existence results to noncompact manifolds of bounded geometry, and gives a first obstruction result for the existence of metrics with leafwise positive scalar curvature in terms of the A-hat class in Haefliger cohomology.
