The paper deals with the critical problem for the \(p\)-Laplacian \[ \begin{cases} -\Delta_p u=\lambda |u|^{p-2}u+ |u|^{p^*-2}u&\text{ in }\ \Omega\,,\\ u=0&\text{ on } \partial\Omega\,, \end{cases}\] in a bounded domain \(\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^N\), where \(1<p<N\) and \(p^*\) is the critical exponent. The author proves the existence of a ground state solution provided that a nontrivial solution exists at an energy level where the PS-condition holds true, assuming also that the parameter \(\lambda\), which controls the shape of the nonlinearity at zero, is not an eigenvalue of the \(p\)-Laplacian. The author also cites several cases where the nontrivial solution was already obtained and then the existence of the ground state solutions can be guaranteed. Finally, the same technique is applied to an analogous problem involving the (nonlocal) fractional \(p\)-Laplacian.
