This is a book which deals with the observer-based fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control (FTC) for switched systems. A switched system contains a set of subsystems and is endowed with a switching law that realize at each switching instant the active subsystem. Such a switching procedure permits realization of a broad class of physical processes and practical systems. The study of this category of systems opens additional insights into some long-standing and sophisticated problems, connected with intelligent control, adaptive control, and robust analysis and control. The existing literature and the corresponding applications show that observer-based technology demonstrated to be an efficient and feasible method in fault diagnosis and FTC. The fault can be accurately diagnosed, by building an observer or filter as a residual generator, based on the obtained residual signal. By using adaptive observer, unknown input observer (UIO), reduced-order observer, proportional-integral observer (PIO) and filter, the focus of this book is to approach the problems of fault detection, fault estimation, and fault accommodation of actuator and sensor faults for switched systems by using adaptive observer, UIO, reduced-order observer, PIO and filter. A basic theoretical framework is formed toward the issues of fault diagnosis and FTC for switched systems by using switched Lyapunov function, linear matrix inequality and average dwell-time techniques. The simulation results illustrate that the presented results permit to achieve the prescribed performance requirements. This book is meant to be used primarily as a book for engineering students in the upper division and for researchers working with automatic and switched control systems and also to be used secondarily due to its structure which facilitates easy understanding of the content.
