In the paper under review, the author uses Toeplitz algebras associated to half-planes and quarter-planes as a tool to study bulk-surface gapped Hamiltonians on lattices with corners. In particular, he uses \(KO\)-theory of these algebras to create a ``periodic table'' for topological invariants related to corner states. He begins the paper with a review of the Boersema and Loring's formulation of \(KO\)-theory for \(C^*\)-algebras. The researcher next recalls the definitions of the relevant Toeplitz algebras and computes the \(KO\) theory of them. For each quarter-place Toeplitz algebra, there is an associated short exact sequence related to index theory, and he establishes some results about the connecting maps in the 24-term \(KO\)-theory exact sequence. The author also briefly discusses the Fredholm index theory of high-dimensional analogs of these Toeplitz algebras. In the main portion of the paper, the researcher uses his \(KO\)-theory results to define topological invariants for the aforementioned gapped Hamiltonians for each of their Altland-Zirnbauer classes. After an extensive discussion of the issues involved, he produces an impressive table of results for 68 distinct cases associated to various symmetries of the Hamiltonian.
