The main result is the following: ``The Banach algebra \(C_{ub} (X, d)\) of bounded uniformly \(\mathbb K\)-valued continuous functions on a metric space \((X, d)\) is coherent if and only if \(d\) is a uniformly discrete metric.'' Here, $\mathbb K\in \{\mathbb R, \mathbb C\}$. The proof of this result is based on \textit{C. W. Neville}'s result that \(C(X, \mathbb R)\) for a Tychonov space is coherent if and only if \(X\) is basically disconnected [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 110, No. 2, 505--508 (1990; Zbl 0719.54019)]. Since \(C_{ub}(X,d)\) is self-adjoint, a survey of general self-adjoint Banach function algebras is presented. In addition, criteria of maximal mirrorings, dense sets in the character space for a general real Banach function algebra, several properties of uniformly continuous functions, the coherence properties and ranks for \(C_{ub}(X,d)\), and several interesting examples are considered.
