Two new types of shift spaces have been defined in recent years, the ones introduced by \textit{W. Ott} et al. [One-sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets. Albany, NY: State University of New York, University at Albany (2014; Zbl 1284.37001)], obtained by adding a new symbol to a given infinite alphabet and then defining a topology in order to obtain a compact space, and those defined by \textit{D. Gonçalves} and \textit{D. Royer} [Bull. Sci. Math. 139, No. 2, 178--183 (2015; Zbl 1407.37012)] with a classical shift space equipped with a walk on an ultra graph and then adding a set (possibly infinite) of new symbols. In this paper the authors present a new shift space that contains both cases and is called shift space. Roughly speaking it is the closure of a classical shift with respect to some topology. Some examples are given and the topology of these spaces is studied in detail. In the final part of the paper they study sliding block codes.
