The book considers the mathematical modeling of several types of facility layout problems as optimization problems. The first two chapters present an overview of the problems and challengers in this area and introduce the facility layout problem on a single row. This is followed by a series of extensions to more complicated layouts such as layout problems on several rows or a single floor. The mathematical optimization techniques presented include mixed integer programming, second-order conic programming and semi-definite programming. Several advanced topics are outlined, such as inequality separation, semi-definite optimization formulations, multi-stage approaches and dynamic facility layout problems. The last chapter considers interesting applications of the facility layout problem to nine selected industries, such as metallurgy, defence industry, shoe manufacturing, automotive industry and hospital layout problems. The authors conclude with an annexe containing the mathematical technicalities of semi-definite and conic optimization.
