The authors prove the inequality \[ \frac{1}{3} \le \lim_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{N} \# \{ 0 \le n < N \colon \operatorname{sgn} w_n (x) = \operatorname{sgn} w_n (y) \} \le \frac{2}{3}, \qquad x \ne y \] for function sequences \(w_n\) satisfying certain asymptotic conditions and show that these two bounds can indeed be attained. They also provide some examples when \(w_n\) are eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators and the above expression can be computed exactly.
