A short review of papers on bending behavior of ultra-thin functionally graded (FG) plates is presented (45 references). In a previous paper by the authors, the Mindlin plate theory for continuum incorporating surface energy effects was exploited to investigate the static behavior of ultra-thin FG plates. The transverse shear strain effect was analyzed by a comparison between the FG plate behavior based on Kirchhoff and Mindlin assumptions. In the analysis, the material surface properties were expected to be the same for the upper and lower surface of the FG plate. However, the effect of a neutral plane position was disregarded for the analysis. Here, a finite element model is developed to investigate the behavior of ultra-thin simply supported FG Mindlin plates when the effect of the neutral plane position for ultra-thin FG films is taken into account.
