The paper deals with a wave equation of the form \[ \begin{cases} u_{tt} - \Delta_{\mathcal M}u + a(x)g_0(u_t) = 0 \quad &\text{in }\mathcal{M}\times ]0,\, \infty [, \\ \partial_{v_{co}}u + u + b(x)g(u_t) = 0 \quad &\text{on }\partial\mathcal{M}\times ]0,\, \infty [, \end{cases} \] where \(\mathcal{M} \subset \mathbb R^3\) is an oriented compact surface. For this equation, stability of solutions is investigated. To do so, the authors raise the following three questions. Is it possible to control or asymptotically stabilize such a system by considering feedbacks acting only a collection of subsets of the boundary and of the interior? If so, what are the restrictions on the geometry and the supports of the feedbacks, and how to characterize admissible geometric configurations? How would the resulting decay rates be affected by the nonlinear growth especially near the origin and at infinity of the scalar feedback maps \(g_0\) and \(g\)? The main result of the paper is that the authors provide a unified answer to all of these questions.
