For a finite group \(G\), let \(M(G)\) be the set of orders of maximal abelian subgroups of \(G\). In the paper under review the authors prove that if \(M(G)=M(A_2(q))\), where \(q\) is not a Mersenne prime, then \(G\) is isomorphic to \(A_2(q)\) or an extension of it by a subgroup of the outer automorphism group of \(A_2(q)\).
