Let \(G\) be a locally compact group and \(\lambda_p\) be the left regular representation of \(G\) on \(L^p(G)\). For \(1<p<\infty\), the Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebras \(A_p(G)\) can be identified with the predual of the space \(PM_p(G)\), the weak\(^*\) closure in \(B(L^p(G))\) of \(\lambda_p(L^1(G))\). In the case \(p=2\), \(A_2(G)\) coincides with the Fourier algebra \(A(G)\). The author works with the \(p\)-operator space structure on \(A_p(G)\) as the dual \(p\)-operator space structure, introduced by \textit{M. Daws} [J. Oper. Theory 63, No. 1, 47--83 (2010; Zbl 1199.46125)]. For locally compact groups \(G\) and \(H\), the author and \textit{N. Spronk} [J. Funct. Anal. 225, No. 2, 480--499 (2005; Zbl 1077.43004)] showed that a continuous piecewise affine map \(\alpha:Y\subset H\to G\) induces a completely bounded homomorphism \(A(G)\to B(H)\) by setting \[ \phi_\alpha(u)(y)=\begin{cases} (u\circ\alpha)(y)&\text{if }y\in Y\\ 0&\text{otherwise}, \end{cases}\tag{1} \] where \(B(H)\) is the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra. Conversely, every completely bounded homomorphism \(A(G)\to B(H)\) is of the form \(\phi_\alpha\) for some continuous piecewise affine map \(\alpha\) provided that \(G\) is amenable. It is natural to ask whether it is possible to extend the results to homomorphisms \(A_p(G)\to A_p(H)\). The main result of the present paper answers this question affirmatively. The author shows that for amenable locally compact groups \(G\) and \(H\), all the \(p\)-completely contractive algebra homomorphisms \(A_p(G)\to A_p(H)\) are implemented by a proper affine map \(\alpha:Y\subset H\to G\) defined as in (1). This generalizes the results known in the Fourier algebra.
