The collection of rank one measure-preserving transformations is of particular importance in understanding generic properties of measure-preserving transformations because it forms a dense \(G_{\delta}\) in the space \({MPT}\) of all invertible measure-preserving transformations with respect to the weak topology (which renders \({MPT}\) a Polish space). This means in particular that a dynamical property that is generic for rank one transformations is generic for all transformations. Rank one transformations may be defined in terms of cutting and stacking constructions (an essentially geometric construction) or as symbolic systems with prescribed properties (an essentially combinatorial construction). In this paper a new Polish topology is constructed on a space of codes for symbolic rank one systems, and it is shown that this space of codes with respect to the topology constructed here, has the same generic dynamical properties as the space of rank one (and hence all) measure-preserving transformations.
