A \(2\)-step nilpotent Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{n}\) is said to be of type \((p, q)\) if \(\dim\mathfrak{n}=p+q\) and \(\dim [\mathfrak{n}, \mathfrak{n}]=p\). By considering a class of \(2\)-step nilpotent Lie algebras naturally attached to graphs, the author proves that there exist indecomposable, \(2\)-step nilpotent Lie groups of type \((p, q)\) which do not admit a nilsoliton metric for every pair \((p,q)\) such that \(21\leq q\) and \(q-1\leq p\leq \frac12 q^2-\frac52q+9\). This improves a result of \textit{M. Jablonski} [Geom. Dedicata 152, 63--84 (2011; Zbl 1219.22009)].
