Let \(\Gamma\) be a countable discrete group equipped with a proper left-invariant metric and \(B \subseteq \Gamma\) be a subspace endowed with a canonical collection of partial right translations \(t^B_g : B \cap Bg \to Bg^{-1} \cap B\), \(t^B_g(x) = xg^{-1}\). These partial translations of \(B\) define partial isometries of \(\ell^2(B)\) in a natural way as the right regular representation \(\rho\), \(T^B_g=\rho(t^B_g)\) and one defines the reduced group \(C^*\)-algebra \(C^*_\rho(B)\). The main result of the paper is the following: ``The Extension Theorem. Let \(B\) and \(X\) be subspaces of \(\Gamma\) such that \(B \subset X \subset \Gamma\) . Let also \(H\) be the left stabiliser of \(B\), \(K\) the left stabiliser of \(X\) and assume that \(H \leq K\). If \(B\) is relatively deep (Definition 1.1) in \(X\) then there exists a short-exact sequence of \(C^*\)-algebras: \(0 \to I(P,B) \to C^*_\rho(B) \to C^*_\rho(X) \to 0,\) where the map \(C^*_\rho(B) \to C^*_\rho(X)\) extends the assignment \(T_g B \to T_g X\), for all \(g \in\Gamma\). Moreover, if \(B\) is relatively \(H\)-almost invariant (Definition 1.2) in \(X\) then the ideal \(I(P, B)\) is the algebra of compact operators on a suitable Hilbert module \(\mathcal E_B\) over the algebra \(C^*_\rho(H)\). In particular the ideal is Morita equivalent to \(C^*_\rho(H)\).'' From the authors' summary: ``We apply this general framework to compute the \(K\)-theory of partial translation algebras and group \(C^*\)-algebras in the context of almost invariant subspaces of discrete groups. This generalises the work of Cuntz, Lance, Pimsner and Voiculescu. In particular we provide a new perspective on Pimsner's calculation of the \(K\)-theory for a graph product of groups.''
