Engineering and science students do need fundamental knowledge in numerical methods. The aim of this book is to provide this knowledge in a textbook of low cost, with simple examples, but still providing all fundamentals. With a size of only about 140 pages, this books covers computer representations of numbers and roundoff error, solving systems of linear equations, finite difference methods, solving nonlinear equations, accuracy in solving linear systems, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, fitting curves to data, numerical integration and initial value problems for ordinary differential equation (ODEs). The algorithms are given in MATLAB and Octave, which is a free version of MATLAB. The codes can be downloaded as well as corresponding Python versions. All ten chapters as well as the appendix on Octave and MATLAB include exercises. The material presented seems appropriate for undergraduates, with knowledge in multivariable calculus, basic in MATLAB, and in combination with a course in ODEs.
