Let \(E\) be an Archimedean vector lattice. An element \(\phi\) in \(E_+\), the positive cone, is called finite if there exists an element \(z\in E_+\) such that for any \(x\in E\) there exists a number \(c_x > 0\) with \( |x|\wedge n |\phi| \leq c_xz\) for all \(n\in \mathbb N\). The element \(z\) is called a majorant of \(\phi\). An element \(\phi\) of \(E\) is called totally finite if it has a majorant which itself is a finite element. The set of all finite elements in \(E\) is denoted by \(\Phi_1(E)\), the set of totally finite elements in \(E\) is denoted by \(\Phi_2(E)\) and we have \(\Phi_2(E) \subseteq \Phi_1(E)\). An element \(\phi\) is self majorizing if \(|\phi|\) is a majorant of \(\phi\). The set of self majorizing elements of \(E\) is denoted by \(S(E) \). Let \(S_+(E) = S(E)\cap E_+\). Then \(\Phi_3(E) = S_+(E) - S_+(E)\). Section 3 of the paper is devoted to self majorizing elements of a vector lattice and Section 4 contains general results on self majorizing elements. In particular, the following result is given. Theorem. Let \(E\) have the principal projection property (or be a Banach lattice). Then, for \(\phi\in E\), the following statements are equivalent: {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] \(\phi\) is self majorizing. \item[(2)] The principal ideal generated by \(\phi\) coincides with the principal band generated by \(\phi\). \item[(3)] \(|\phi|\) is an order unit in the principle band generated by \(\phi\). \end{itemize}} In Section 5, self majorizing elements, in particular vector lattices are studied. These vector lattices include \(l^\infty\), the space of all real sequences \(s\), continuous functions on the real line \(C(\mathbb R)\), \(B[0,1]\) bounded functions on \([0,1]\), all real convergent sequences \(c\), etc. In the final section, the authors study the comparision of ideals generated by self majorizing elements with ideals of all finite and totally finite elements.
