The authors prove that the symmetry group of any Gâteaux differentiable functional is also a symmetry group of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations. Moreover, it is shown that, in the general case, the nonlinear generators of a symmetry group form a Lie algebra with respect to the commutator of two generators.
