Spectral problems in nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics may be analyzed and sometimes solved using the method of spectral renormalization group. Some helpful simplifications as well as extensions have been published in the past. Very often the method has been used to determine the spectrum of Hamiltonians and the eigenvalues immersed in the continuum, a problem which has been recognized as being rather difficult. The intention of the present paper is to describe the general method in detail. To simplify the study, the authors restrict themselves to operators that, although simple, include the most important ingredients of atomic physics. In essence, they present a rather new approach by constructing a flow of operators using a continuous real variable to parametrize the flow. This approach may be viewed as an application of the so-called Feynman-Schur map.
