Let \(k\) be a field, and let \(G\) be a finite group. The first Cartan invariant \(c_{11}\) is the multiplicity of the trivial \(kG\)-module \(k_G\) as a composition factor of the projective cover \(P(k_G)\) of \(k_G\). Thus \(c_{11}=\dim\text{End}_{kG}(P(k_G))\), and \(c_{11}\) is also the first Cartan invariant of \(G/O_{2'}(G)\). By making use of the classification of the finite simple groups, the author determines the finite groups \(G\) with \(c_{11}=2\) where \(k\) is a field of characteristic 2. If \(G\) is solvable then his result follows from a paper by \textit{Y. Tsushima} [Osaka J. Math. 20, 675-679 (1983; Zbl 0518.20007)]. Thus, suppose that \(G\) is nonsolvable with \(O_{2'}(G)=1\) and that \(\text{char}(k)=2\). The author shows that \(c_{11}=2\) if and only if \(O^{2'}(G)\cong\text{PSL}(2,q)\) for some prime power \(q\equiv 3\pmod 4\).
