The authors study a class of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations without any assumptions on the dimension of the ambient space. They show that if the equation satisfies an energy condition, then any solution satisfying a certain stability condition is radially symmetric and thus one-dimensional. Classical examples within the considered class are the \(p\)-Laplacian and the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator. The proof is essentially based on a geometric Poincaré inequality. As an application solutions of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator with a Morse index bounded by the dimension are studied.
