In analogy to Kähler manifolds \((M,g, J)\) where the complex structure \(J\) is parallel with respect to \(g\), the author considers different parallel sections of \(\text{End}(TM)\). In the Riemannian case, these parallel sections are endomorphisms of the form \(\lambda\mathrm{Id}+\mu J\) where \(J\) is some parallel, skew adjoint, almost complex structure. This is a consequence of the irreducibility of the action of the holonomy group \(H\) on indecomposable Riemannian metrics. For pseudo-Riemannian metrics, this action of \(H\) is not necessarily irreducible and other parallel endomorphisms may appear. The commutant \(\text{End}(T_mM)^H\) of \(H\) at a point \(m\in M\) turns out to have the form \(\text{End}(T_mM)^H=\mathfrak s\oplus \mathfrak n\) where \(\mathfrak n\) is a nilpotent Lie algebra and \(\mathfrak s\) belongs to a restricted list of eight semisimple Lie algebras. The author introduces concepts such as \textit{nilpotent structures on manifolds} as an integrable fields of nilpotent endomorphisms of \(M\) and \textit{nilomorphic functions} imitating the definitions in the context of complex structures, among other concepts. One of the most relevant results of the paper summarizes as follows: Given a nilpotent self-adjoint element of the commutant of \(\mathfrak s\) in \(\text{End}(T_mM)\), it is possible to parametrize the germ of metrics such that the elements in \(\mathfrak s\cup \{N\}\) extend as parallel endomorphism fields.
