Let \(G\) be a finite non-nilpotent group. By the classical results of O. J. Schmidt and J. S. Rose, if every maximal subgroup of \(G\) is nilpotent then \(G\) is of order \(p^iq^j\), has a normal \(p\)-Sylow subgroup and a cyclic \(q\)-Sylow subgroup, called a Schmidt group; if every non-normal maximal subgroup of \(G\) is nilpotent then \(G\) has a normal Sylow subgroup with nilpotent factor, called a Rose group. These results were extended by many authors such as \textit{M. Asaad} [Glasg. Math. J. 51, No. 2, 359-366 (2009; Zbl 1178.20013)], \textit{Q. Li} and \textit{X. Guo} [Arch. Math. 96, No. 1, 1-7 (2011; Zbl 1222.20013)] and \textit{A. N. Skiba} [J. Algebra 343, No. 1, 173-182 (2011; Zbl 1247.20020)]. The authors of the present paper define a Schmidt-cover for \(G\) as a (possibly nonempty) set \(\mathcal K\) of non-nilpotent subgroups such that they do not contain one another, and if the subgroup \(T\) supplements the nilpotent residual of \(G\) then either \(T\) is nilpotent, \(T\in\mathcal K\) or \(T\subset\bigcap\mathcal K\); the cover is maximal if it contains all non-nilpotent maximal subgroups. The main results are as follows: A. If \(G\) has a Schmidt-cover and has no section isomorphic to \(A_5\) then \(G\) is soluble; B. If \(G\) is soluble and has a Schmidt-cover then \(G\) is of Fitting-length \(3\), and the number of prime divisors of \(|G|\) is between 2 and \(l+2\) where \(l\) is the number of conjugacy classes of subgroups in a maximal Schmidt-covering.
