The simplest version of a free boundary problem is given by the linear heat equation in a domain that itself changes in time. The present authors study a particle version in which the heat equation is replaced by the one-dimensional symmetric simple exclusion process, with a rightmost particle and a leftmost hole. Births and deaths under prescribed assumptions are allowed. The main result concerns convergence to a hydrodynamic limit. The relation to free boundary problems is also discussed.
