Let \(M(\alpha)\) be the Mahler measure of an algebraic number \(\alpha\), and let \(\Omega(\alpha)=M(\alpha)^{1/\deg (\alpha)}\). In [Math. Comput. 37, 205--208 (1981; Zbl 0475.12001)] \textit{C. J. Smyth} proved that if \(\alpha\) is a totally positive algebraic integer then, with a finite set of exceptions, \(\Omega(\alpha) \geq 1.717177\dots\). The numerical constant was improved several times with the latest one being \(1.721916\dots\) by \textit{Q. Mu} and \textit{Q. Wu} [J. Number Theory 133, No. 1, 12--19 (2013; Zbl 1310.11108)]. In this paper, the author improves the constant to \(1.722069\dots\) (Theorem 1). In Theorem 2, the author obtains a similar result for a version of Mahler measure introduced earlier by \textit{I. E. Pritsker} [Ill. J. Math. 52, No. 2, 347--363 (2009; Zbl 1232.11111)]. (In the statement of Theorem 2 it should be ``If \(\alpha\) is a totally positive algebraic integer...''.)
